Day 3 London. (Sat.) Morning
sightseeing with a professional London guide includes all the
famous landmarks: Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace and the
area's splendid museums, Knightsbridge with Harrods, the Houses
of Parliament and Big Ben beside the River Thames, and
Westminster Abbey. Highlights are a visit to ST. PAUL'S
CATHEDRAL and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, if
held. Time in the afternoon for independent activities. Optional
excursions are available to the Tower of London and to Windsor
Castle. Tonight maybe a cruise on the River Thames? (CB)
Day 4 London-Calais, France-Bruges, Belgium.
(Sun.) Meet your tour director and traveling companions and
depart London. A drive through the orchards of Kent and then an
exciting Hoverspeed ride across the Channel to France. Motor
through Flanders to Bruges, an ideal place to enjoy a first
taste of the best Europe has to offer. Tonight join your tour
director for a toast to happy touring. (CB,D)
Day 5 Bruges-Brussels-Amsterdam, Holland.
(Mon.) Take a morning stroll through the beautifully preserved
medieval heart of Bruges, a once-important wool trading port. On
to Brussels, the proud capital of Belgium and the European
Union. Admire the ornate Baroque guildhalls of Grand' Place, and
see famous Mannekin-Pis. After lunch it's north to Amsterdam,
Holland's 700-year-old capital. (BB,D)
Day 6 Amsterdam. (Tue.) A local expert
takes you first to the RIJKSMUSEUM where you admire Rembrandt's
masterpieces. You will cruise Amsterdam's canals and visit a
major DIAMOND CENTER. To top it off, drive to the spectacular
once-in-a-decade World Horticultural Exhibition, the FLORIADE.
Tonight your tour director will suggest a typical restaurant for
a fine optional dinner. (BB)
Day 7 Amsterdam-Coblenz, Germany.
(Wed.) Motor through the region best known as the locale of
A Bridge Too Far, and on through the heavily
industrialized Ruhr area, backbone of Germany's economic might.
An early lunchtime arrival in Cologne for a visit to the awesome
GOTHIC CATHEDRAL. Its twin 515-foot towers, five naves, and
splendid, stained-glass windows are powerful testimony to the
quality of medieval engineering and craftsmanship. Next drive
through Bonn to the ruins of the bridge in Remagen where
American troops breached Hitler's West Wall. After reaching the
wine center of Coblenz, there is still time for an optional
excursion to Marksburg Castle, the only one in this area never
to have been destroyed. (BB,D)
Day 8 Coblenz-Rhine Cruise-Trier.
(Thu.) Board an excursion steamer and cruise up the Rhine, past
terraced vineyards, castle-crested cliffs, and half-timbered
towns. Lunch break in picturesque and sometimes boisterous
Rüdesheim, followed by a scenic drive through the hills of the
Hunsrück Massif. Then vistas of the Moselle Valley where the
best Riesling wines grow. Late afternoon arrival in pretty Trier,
one of Germany's oldest towns. Its Porta Nigra is considered one
of the finest Roman relics in northern Europe. (BB,D)
Day 9 Trier-Luxembourg-Paris, France.
(Fri.) Focus on Luxembourg, the last of hundreds of independent
duchies which once made up western and central Europe. Today the
Grand Duchy owes its importance to its role in international
politics and banking. Your orientation tour of the stately
capital features the Ducal Palace and Notre Dame Cathedral. Then
across the border into northern France, and past the
battlefields of Verdun right into the heart of Champagne
country. In Reims visit the CATHEDRAL where Joan of Arc arranged
the consecration of Charles VII, and call at a famous WINERY to
hear about the fine art of champagne-making. Tonight you are in
Paris, France's splendid capital. (BB)
Day 10 Paris. (Sat.) See the sights on
both banks of the Seine: Arc de Triomphe, Opéra, Madeleine,
Louvre, Champs-Elysées... For a panoramic view take the elevator
to the first floor of the EIFFEL TOWER. Of course you also visit
Paris' greatest treasure, the Gothic cathedral of NOTRE DAME
with its gleaming stained-glass windows. Balance of the day at
leisure and lots to do. Optional excursions are available to the
Louvre or to the palace and gardens of Versailles; and to
celebrate the success of this great tour, a lively cabaret show
might be just the ticket. (BB)
