Day 3 London. (Wed.) Morning
sightseeing with a professional London guide includes all the
famous landmarks: Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace and the
area's splendid museums, Knightsbridge with Harrods, the Houses
of Parliament and Big Ben beside the River Thames, and
Westminster Abbey. Highlights are a visit to ST. PAUL'S
CATHEDRAL and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, if

Day 4 London-Paris, France. (Thu.) Meet
your tour director and traveling companions and depart London.
Drive through the orchards of Kent and then enjoy an exciting
Hoverspeed ride across the Channel to France. Memories of some
of the fiercest World War I battles come alive on the way
through Picardy and the Somme to Paris. Tonight join your tour
director for a toast to happy touring. (CB)
Day 5 Paris. (Fri.) See the sights on
both banks of the Seine: Arc de Triomphe, Opéra, Madeleine,
Louvre, Champs-Elysées... For a bird's-eye view take the
elevator to the first floor of the EIFFEL TOWER. Of course you
also visit Paris' greatest treasure, the Gothic cathedral of
NOTRE DAME with its gleaming stained-glass windows. Balance of
the day at leisure. Optional excursions are available to the
Louvre or to the palace and gardens of Versailles. Tonight a
lively cabaret show might be fun. (BB)
Day 6 Paris-Brussels, Belgium. (Sat.)
Morning visit to one of the famous CHAMPAGNE WINERIES in Reims
to hear about the art of champagne-making. On to Brussels, the
Belgian capital which hosts the headquarters of the European
Union. On your orientation tour: St. Michael's Cathedral and the
King's Palace, the massive stone structure of the Palais de
Justice, Mannekin-Pis, and the ornate Baroque guildhalls of
Grand' Place. Finally enjoy a DEMONSTRATION OF LACE-MAKING, a

Day 7 Brussels-Amsterdam, Holland.
(Sun.) Into the Netherlands and past the busy seaport of
Rotterdam to Amsterdam. Visit a major DIAMOND CENTER to
appreciate how a rough mineral is transformed into a sparkling
jewel. Then leisurely Dutch-style sightseeing aboard a
glass-roofed launch gliding through the city's maze of canals.
Afternoon free. An optional excursion to the quaint fishing
village of Volendam can be arranged. (BB,D)
Day 8 Amsterdam-Rhineland, Germany.
(Mon.) A passing glance at the region best known as the locale
of A Bridge Too Far on the way to the German
Rhineland. During your early lunchtime break in Cologne visit
the awesome twin-spired GOTHIC CATHEDRAL. Then the afternoon's
highlight: a cruise on the romantic Rhine, past castle-crested
cliffs and terraced vineyards. Next stop is Heidelberg, famous
for its red-walled castle. (BB,D)
Day 9 Rhineland-Lucerne, Switzerland.
(Tue.) A scenic day! Morning in the lush valleys and pine-clad
hills of the Black Forest, renowned for its cuckoo clocks. On
the Swiss border take your pictures of the thundering RHINE
FALLS, then continue to picture-book Lucerne. (BB,D)
Day 10 Lucerne. (Wed.) Sightseeing
features the LION MONUMENT; the famous covered WOODEN BRIDGE;
and ornate patrician houses lining the cobbled streets of the
walled Old Town. Afterwards shop for Swiss watches and choose
from our optional activities: climb a mountain by cable car;
take a cruise on the fjord-like lake; sign up for a folklore
party with yodeling and alphorn blowing for a first-hand
impression of alpine merrymaking. (BB)
Day 11 Lucerne-Liechtenstein-Innsbruck, Austria.
(Thu.) Morning break in the pocket-sized principality of
Liechtenstein. On over scenic Arlberg Pass to Innsbruck,
Austria's Olympic winter sports resort. Take a pleasant walk
through its quaint medieval lanes to Emperor Maximilian's Golden

Day 12 Innsbruck-Venice, Italy. (Fri.)
Spectacular Brenner Pass leads towards the Tyrolean Alps; then
over Tre Croci Pass to Cortina, beneath the limestone towers of
the Dolomites. After lunch follow the course of the Piave River
down to the Adriatic Sea. Time still for an optional gondola
serenade on Venice's romantic canals! (BB,D)
Day 13 Venice-Florence. (Sat.) Start
the day in style as you glide by private boat along the Giudecca
canal to meet your resident expert. Highlights of your walking
tour are St. Mark's Square, the Clock Tower, the BYZANTINE
BASILICA, lavish Doges' Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Also
watch VENETIAN GLASS BLOWERS fashion their delicate objects. In
the afternoon drive through Emilia and Romagna and across the
wooded Etruscan Apennine Hills to Florence, cradle of the

Day 14 Florence-Rome. (Sun.) See
magnificent SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE, Giotto's Bell Tower, the
Baptistry's heavy bronze "Gate of Paradise," and
sculpture-studded Signoria Square. To top it off, admire
Michelangelo's celebrated David in the GALLERY OF FINE ARTS.
Afterwards, time to shop for Florentine leather goods and gold
jewelry before you speed south along the Highway of the Sun to

Day 15 Rome. (Mon.) Sightseeing with
your local guide starts with a visit to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and
SISTINE CHAPEL (arranged next morning if closed today), world
famous for Michelangelo's ceiling paintings including The
Last Judgement. Continue to monumental ST. PETER'S
SQUARE and BASILICA. Proceed across the Tiber for a stroll along
the Via Sacra at the ROMAN FORUM, and finally visit the
COLOSSEUM. Then time for independent activities and exciting
optional excursion possibilities: Tivoli, and an Italian feast
at one of the fine restaurants. (BB)
Day 16 Rome-Capri-Sorrento. (Tue.)
Through Campagna Romana to the colorful harbor of Naples, from
where a sleek jetfoil whisks you across the bay to the Isle of
Capri, a royal retreat for 2,000 years. Visit the shimmering
BLUE GROTTO (weather permitting; otherwise visit VILLA SAN
MICHELE in Anacapri), then up to pretty Capri village. Time to
amble about at your own pace before returning across the bay to
the charming resort of Sorrento. (BB)
Day 17 Sorrento-Bari-Ionian Sea Crossing.
(Wed.) On the way from the Tyrrhenian to the Ionian Sea visit
the archaeological treasures of POMPEII, the Roman city both
destroyed and preserved by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79
A.D. See patrician homes, public baths, and commercial districts
strikingly recalling day-to-day life when Rome was at the apex
of her power. In Bari board your overnight ferry bound for

Day 18 Ionian Sea-Patras-Olympia, Greece.
(Thu.) Sail across the sea which Ulysses explored in the
Odyssey. Dock at Patras and continue by coach to Olympia, where
the athletes of antiquity performed in honor of the King of
Deities. Learn about the history of those original Olympic Games
as you walk among the impressive remains of the GYMNASIUM and
the Temples of Hera and Zeus. Visit the MUSEUM which displays a
magnificent statue of Hermes. (BB,D)
Day 19 Olympia-Delphi. (Fri.) This
morning return to Patras, take the ferry across the Gulf of
Corinth, and proceed through the picturesque fishing villages
along the south coast of the mainland to mythical Delphi. Visit
the ancient sanctuary of the god Apollo in its dramatic setting
on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Hear about the Oracle and tour
the EXCAVATIONS. Also visit the ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM to admire
the Charioteer, an extraordinary 5th-century B.C. bronze statue.

Day 20 Delphi-Athens. (Sat.) History
comes alive this morning on your way to Athens as you pass the
sites of Thebes, the setting of Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, and
Marathon, where in 490 B.C. 10,000 Athenians defeated more than
twice that number of Persian invaders. In Athens enjoy a tour of
the capital's classical sights: the Parthenon's crowning beauty
atop the ACROPOLIS, the Erechtheum with its Porch of Maidens,
the beautifully preserved Theseum, Roman Temple of Zeus, Theater
of Dionysus, and the Agora where Socrates taught. Vistas of the
Royal Palace, government buildings, and elegant homes in the
modern city provide a striking contrast to the remains of the
glorious past. (BB)
Day 21 Athens. (Sun.) A full day at
leisure. How about an optional day cruise to the islands of
Aegina, Hydra, and Poros? Possibilities for your last night in
Greece are just as exciting: Plaka's outdoor tavernas with their
succulent local food and cool Retsina wines, and folk dancing
reminiscent of "Zorba the Greek!" (BB)
