sightseeing with a professional London guide includes all the
famous landmarks: Royal Albert Hall, Kensington Palace and the
area's splendid museums, Knightsbridge with Harrods, the Houses
of Parliament and Big Ben beside the River Thames, and
Westminster Abbey. Highlights are a visit to ST. PAUL'S
CATHEDRAL and the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, if
held. Time in the afternoon for independent activities. Optional
excursions are available to the Tower of London and to Windsor
Castle. Tonight maybe a leisurely cruise on the River Thames?

Day 4 London-Calais, France-Brussels, Belgium.
(Wed.) Meet your tour director and traveling companions and
depart London. Drive through the orchards of Kent and then enjoy
an exciting Hoverspeed ride across the Channel to France. On
through Flanders to Brussels, proud capital of Belgium and the
European Union. Your orientation drive focuses on Grand' Place
with its Baroque guild houses and Gothic Town Hall, and famous
Mannekin-Pis. Tonight join your tour director for a toast to

Day 5 Brussels-Amsterdam, Holland.
(Thu.) Into the Netherlands and past the busy seaport of
Rotterdam to Amsterdam. Visit a major DIAMOND CENTER to
appreciate how a rough mineral is transformed into a sparkling
jewel. Then leisurely Dutch-style sightseeing aboard a
glass-roofed launch gliding through the city's maze of canals.
Afternoon free. An optional excursion to the quaint fishing
village of Volendam can be arranged. (BB,D)
Day 6 Amsterdam-Rhineland, Germany.
(Fri.) A passing glance at the Dutch region best known as the
locale of A Bridge Too Far on the way to Germany.
During your early lunchtime break in Cologne, visit the awesome
twin-spired GOTHIC CATHEDRAL. Then the afternoon's highlight: a
cruise on the romantic Rhine, past castle-crested cliffs,
terraced vineyards, and trim, half-timbered towns. Next stop is
Heidelberg, famous for its red-walled castle. (BB,D)
Day 7 Rhineland-Lucerne, Switzerland.
(Sat.) A scenic day! Morning in the lush valleys and pine-clad
hills of the Black Forest, renowned for its cuckoo clocks. On
the Swiss border take your pictures of the thundering RHINE
FALLS, then continue to picture-book Lucerne. (BB,D)
Day 8 Lucerne. (Sun.) Sightseeing
features Thorwaldsen's LION MONUMENT, the famous covered WOODEN
BRIDGE, and rows of ornate patrician houses lining the cobbled
streets of the walled Old Town. Afterwards shop for Swiss
watches and choose from our optional activities: climb a
mountain by cable car; take a cruise on the fjord-like lake;
sign up for a folklore party with yodeling and alphorn blowing
for a first-hand impression of alpine merrymaking. (BB)
Day 9 Lucerne-Liechtenstein-Innsbruck, Austria.
(Mon.) Morning break in the pocket-sized principality of
Liechtenstein. On over scenic Arlberg Pass to Innsbruck,
Austria's Olympic winter sports resort. Take a pleasant walk
through quaint medieval lanes to Emperor Maximilian's Golden

Day 10 Innsbruck-Venice, Italy. (Tue.)
The spectacular Brenner Pass leads through the barrier of the
Tyrolean Alps to Italy. Enter Venice in style as you glide by
private boat along the Giudecca canal to meet your resident
expert. Highlights of your walking tour are St. Mark's Square,
the Clock Tower, the BYZANTINE BASILICA with its 1,000-year-old
gem-studded gold altar piece, lavish Doges' Palace, and the
Bridge of Sighs. Also watch skilled GLASS BLOWERS fashion their
delicate objects. Afterwards wander at whim or join an optional
gondola serenade. (BB)
Day 11 Venice-Rome. (Wed.) Along the
coastline of the Adriatic Sea towards Ravenna, then inland on
the scenic road through the Apennine Hills to peaceful Assisi.
Visit the massive 13th-century BASILICA OF ST. FRANCIS built
above the saint's grave. In the afternoon speed south to the
Eternal City. (BB)
Day 12 Rome. (Thu.) Sightseeing with
your local guide starts with a visit to the VATICAN MUSEUMS and
SISTINE CHAPEL (arranged next morning if closed today), world
famous for Michelangelo's ceiling paintings including The
Last Judgement. Continue to monumental ST. PETER'S
SQUARE and BASILICA. Proceed across the Tiber for a stroll along
the Via Sacra at the ROMAN FORUM, where Roman Legions marched in
triumph, and finally visit the COLOSSEUM and hear about
gladiatorial combats. Then time for independent activities and
exciting optional excursion possibilities: Tivoli, and an
Italian feast at one of the fine restaurants. (BB)
Day 13 Rome-Florence. (Fri.) An easy
morning drive back north to Florence, cradle of the Renaissance.
See magnificent SANTA MARIA DEL FIORE, Giotto's Bell Tower, the
Baptistry's heavy bronze "Gate of Paradise," and the
sculpture-studded Signoria Square. To top it off, admire
Michelangelo's celebrated David in the GALLERY OF FINE ARTS.
Take a moment to check out the enticing shops with Florentine

Day 14 Florence-Monaco-Nice, France.
(Sat.) Focus on Pisa this morning for pictures of its amazing
Leaning Tower, 180 feet high and 16 feet out of the
perpendicular. Then a scenic drive past a string of Italian and
French Riviera resorts to the principality of Monaco. Here leave
the highway for the panoramic Moyenne Corniche. Before arriving
in Nice visit one of the PERFUME FACTORIES for which the area is
famous. Optional outing tonight to the Casino of Monte Carlo.

Day 15 Nice. French Riviera Excursion.
(Sun.) Follow the glittering shores of the Côte d'Azur to Cannes
of film festival fame. On the inland route back to Nice visit
the picturesque hilltop town of St. Paul de Vence. Then a lazy
afternoon to dabble in the blue Mediterranean or stroll along
the elegant Promenade des Anglais. (BB)
Day 16 Nice-Lyon. (Mon.) Through the
sun-drenched landscapes of Van Gogh's beloved Provence to
Avignon, an important spiritual center in the Middle Ages and
the residence of several antipopes. Take your pictures of the
Gothic papal palace and the bridge of the popular song before
proceeding through the orchards of the Rhône Valley to Lyon, the
country's second largest city. (BB,D)
Day 17 Lyon-Paris. (Tue.) Board the
famous TGV, the high-speed train that whisks you to Paris in
time for lunch. This afternoon discover the beautiful capital of
France. Your city tour will show you the sights on both banks of
the Seine: Arc de Triomphe, Opéra, Madeleine, Louvre,
Champs-Elysées... For a bird's-eye view take the elevator to the
first floor of the EIFFEL TOWER. Of course you also visit Paris'
greatest treasure, the Gothic cathedral of NOTRE DAME with its
gleaming stained-glass windows. (BB)
Day 18 Paris. (Wed.) A full day at
leisure for you to explore this vibrant city at your own pace.
This afternoon you may want to join an optional excursion to the
Louvre or to the palace and gardens of Versailles. For a
memorable last night in France, a lively cabaret show might be
